Amendoeira Golf – O’Connor
The Amendoeira – O’Connor golf course is set in outstanding beauty in central Algarve in the Silves area, just 35 minutes from Faro Airport. It has fabulous views of the Monchique mountains with it’s rolling hills and valleys abundant with almond, carob and orange trees. This stunning area is also home to over fifty species of birds.
Silves is an enchanting town littered with orange and lemon trees, sitting on the banks of the Rio Arade. There is history everywhere you look in Silves, to remind you of it’s affluent and bold past as a Moorish capital (“Xelb”).The importance of Silves lay in the fact that it was the main access to the inland areas of the Algarve because of its river location, although the river is now too silted up for large vessels to use.The most prominent monument is Castelo de Silves, which is now the best preserved castle in the Algarve. The castle and the Cathedral beside it are the first buildings you see as you approach Silves, as they sit on the hilltop above the town. Christy O’Connor has tried to capture the essence of this moorish area in the design of the Amendoeira golf course.
The Amendoeira – O’Connor golf course perfectly compliments the Faldo course, whilst taking advantage of the rich valley soil in contrast to the arid hillside. This course offers no less of challenge than the Faldo course.
Large areas of water demand accurate play and creative shot making, and these lakes and streams are to be maintained as a wildlife sactuary. The 5th hole has orange groves left and right and is a real honour to play. There is also a large orange grove to the left on the 4th hole. This Amendoeira course also has a version of the Amen corner, starting at the 7th hole. There is a lake which runs from the 9th hole, through to the 8th and 7th, so it creates a chain reaction starting at the 7th.
.The 9th is the real key hole of the course, as the lake runs from the right of the tee and also to the left of the second shot, it is almost a two part golf hole. The 18th hole brings the course to a fantastic end, with a gentle climb and the river running.
